'Ecdat' apartment: They erected a building next to the registered Ottoman cistern

The Ottoman period cistern, which was registered as a cultural property and surrounded by a protective tape, was left in the garden of the 6-storey apartment building, the construction of which was completed 6 months ago, in Yaylacık District 38th Street in the Buca district of Izmir.

Providing information about the construction work carried out around the registered building, İzmir No. 1 Regional Board of Cultural Heritage Preservation Director Ulvi Özel said, “We registered the cistern and put a protective tape around it. Then the project in question came to our board and was discussed. We approved the project by saying, 'You will not approach the building more than 3 meters'. Noting that the resettlement process of the apartment is continuing, Özel said, “After we receive information from the municipality that the resettlement process has been completed, our experts will go and check whether the building has been built in accordance with the project we have approved. If there is a contradiction, then we cut and reap. In addition, expropriation was required in order not to allow the construction of the apartment building. There is no such power,” he said.

''We found it strange, it was left in the middle like an egg''

Ali Baş, the official of Baş İnşaat, who erected a 6-storey apartment right in front of the building, which is registered as a cultural property, said: “We have also taken our settlement. We have no official action left to complete. In fact, the apartment was 90 percent full. Of course, we find the building in front of the apartment strange too. The image is disturbing. Actually, we were going to apply to the court to have this structure removed, but we didn't have time. We started construction right away. What they call a historical building is barely standing. We cleared the land around it. We took the whole soil, turned it with concrete. It lay in the middle like an egg.”
